Logarithmic paper, also known as log paper or log graph paper, is a specialised type of graph paper where the spacing between the lines corresponds to a logarithmic scale. Unlike standard graph paper with evenly spaced grids, logarithmic paper is designed for plotting data that spans several orders of magnitude, such as exponential growth or decay.
The concept of logarithmic plotting can be traced back to the 17th century with the development of logarithms by John Napier, a Scottish mathematician. While Napier didn’t create logarithmic paper, his invention laid the foundation for its use. Modern log paper became popular with the rise of engineering, physics, and scientific fields, where data often varies exponentially.
Logarithmic paper is widely used in science, engineering, and finance to visualise data such as sound intensity, pH values, population growth, or stock market trends. By converting data to a logarithmic scale, users can easily compare values that differ by large factors, allowing for more insightful analysis. It is a valuable tool for plotting anything involving ratios or powers of ten.
