The Vitruvian Man, created by Leonardo da Vinci around 1490, is a prime example of Renaissance art blending with scientific inquiry. This iconic drawing, based on the work of the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius, illustrates the ideal human body proportions. Vitruvius described the human figure as being the principal source of proportion among the Classical orders of architecture, with a set of perfect ratios. Leonardo's drawing translates these ancient texts into a visual form, showing a man fitting perfectly within a circle and a square.
The diagram itself often uses a grid to better convey these proportions and measurements. This grid functions similarly to graph paper, a tool that helps accurately represent and study geometric and spatial relationships. When overlaid on the Vitruvian Man, the grid highlights key proportional relationships.
