Joseph Priestley (1733-1804)

Joseph Priestley (1733–1804) was an English theologian, chemist, and philosopher who significantly contributed to data visualisation by creating one of the earliest known timelines, "A Chart of Biography" (1765). This chart visually represented the lifespans of 2,000 historical figures, pioneering the use of graphical methods to convey complex information. Priestley's work in this area influenced the development of modern infographics and data representation techniques, laying the groundwork for future innovations in charts and graphs.

"The feeling of it to my lungs was not sensibly different from that of common air; but I fancied that my breast felt peculiarly light and easy for some time afterwards. Who can tell but that, in time, this pure air may become a fashionable article in luxury. Hitherto only two mice and myself have had the privilege of breathing it."

- Joseph Priestley (1775). “Experiments and Observations on Different Kinds of Air: Vol. II. By Joseph Priestley,” page 102.
