William Playfair (1759–1823)

William Playfair (1759–1823) was a Scottish engineer, economist, and pioneer in the field of data visualization. Born in Scotland, Playfair's diverse interests led him to make significant contributions to various fields.

In 1786, Playfair moved to London, where he worked as a draftsman and engineer. His inquisitive mind and passion for statistics and economics led him to develop innovative ways to visually represent data. In 1786, he published "The Commercial and Political Atlas," where he introduced the line graph, bar chart, and pie chart—revolutionary tools that transformed the presentation of statistical information.

Playfair's most notable contribution was the creation of the pie chart, presented in his 1801 book, Statistical Breviary. This circular diagram became a fundamental tool for illustrating the proportional distribution of a whole. His work laid the groundwork for modern data visualization, influencing generations of statisticians and economists.
