Hiroshi Ono (1957-2021)

Hiroshi Ono, known as "Mr. Dotman," was a pioneering figure in the world of pixel art and video game design. Born on June 5, 1957, Ono made his mark as a key artist at Namco during the 1980s, where his work helped define the visual identity of classic arcade games like Pac-Man, Galaga, and Dig Dug. His ability to create iconic characters and environments within the strict limitations of early video game hardware established him as one of the foremost artists in the industry.

Joining Namco in 1979, Ono quickly became instrumental in the development of Pac-Man (1980), one of the most recognisable video games in history. Working within an 8x8 pixel grid, he designed the simple yet iconic character of Pac-Man, whose expressive movements and distinct personality were conveyed with minimal visual detail. Ono's use of grids allowed him to craft characters that were not only immediately identifiable but also full of charm and life.

Beyond Pac-Man, Ono’s artistry extended to other classic titles. In Galaga (1981), he created detailed enemy sprites and fluid animations that pushed the boundaries of what was possible with pixel art at the time. Dig Dug (1982) further demonstrated his talent, as he designed characters and underground environments that were both visually appealing and memorable, all within the constraints of a grid-based design.

Ono's influence on the video game industry is profound. His work set the standard for pixel art and inspired countless artists and developers. Even decades later, his designs remain iconic and continue to influence modern retro-inspired games.

In 2015, Hiroshi Ono made a cameo appearance in the film Pixels, which pays homage to the golden age of arcade games. This cameo was a fitting recognition of his contributions to the creation of some of the most beloved characters in gaming history.

Hiroshi Ono passed away on October 16, 2021.
